Since graduating from the Royal College of Music in 1972, Richard Harvey has been a ubiquitous presence on the London music scene. His early forays into the professional world involved playing recorder and early woodwinds with his own group Gryphon and ancient music pioneers "Musica Reservata". His later work with composer Maurice Jarre led him into film composing in the late 1970s and it has been his principal activity ever since.

Richard's passion for instruments from all around the world, old and new, has led him to work on a fascinatingly diverse range of projects - from feature films to documentaries, television dramas to live performances, whether it be conducting, playing, producing or writing.

The projects that he has been involved with range from writing a massive eco-musical "Plague and the Moonflower" to co-writing with Hans Zimmer on the biggest box office hit "The Da Vinci Code". His skills as a multi-instrumentalist are often called upon for feature films such as "The Lion King", all the Harry Potter films, "Kingdom of Heaven" and many more. The fact that he has a collection of nearly 600 instruments from around the world and plays most of them means he is highly in demand in this area.

He has recorded for and collaborated with Sir Paul McCartney, Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams, Kate Bush, Elvis Costello, John Williams, Stanley Myers and numerous others.

Scoring countless television dramas - from Jane Eyre and Game, Set and Match to Alan Bleasdale's G.B.H - has been a highlight of his career. A more recent television success was the feature length Granada Television film "Colditz", for which Richard's score received an Ivor Novello nomination.

Richard's composition for guitar and orchestra, Concerto Antico, continues to be premiered in concert and has been recorded by John Williams with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Richard's musical career, starting with recorder lessons at the age of four, led him to first clarinet with the British Youth Symphony Orchestra and then on to the Royal College of Music before he was 20. He formed the internationally successful folk group Gryphon, with which he toured three continents, playing 30 different instruments and recording five albums.

Now in his early 50s, Richard is a prolific composer, an occasional guest conductor and a virtuoso performer on a vast collection of instruments - blown, plucked, keyed, bowed, beaten and programmed. He has made several classical albums, including a Classical Record of the Year Italian Recorder Concertos, which demonstrate breathtaking fluency and exhilarating woodwind technique, and remains in the Gramophone Magazine's Top 100.

He was honoured with a Royal invitation to provide the musical score for the major and historic Thai movie Suriyothai, premiered in August 2001 in Bangkok. This movie has since seen nationwide acclaim in Thailand and Richard enjoyed working with Francis Ford Coppola, the film's executive producer.

In 2006 Richard was commissioned to score Borough Films' controversial and International Emmy award-winning feature film "Death of a President", which is set in 2007 and explores the after-effects of President Bush's post-9/11 foreign policy. The scene is set with Bush's assassination and using a combination of archive and real footage, director Gabriel Range manages to create an authentic real time experience for the viewer. Range's style is such that if you were to switch the television on halfway through, you'd be forgiven for believing that President Bush had actually been assassinated.

Most recently Richard has scored moving historical drama feature film 'Eichmann' (2007) starring German superstar Thomas Kretschmann, and idiosyncratic French fantasy 'Les Deux Mondes' (2007) starring Belgian superstar Benoit Poelvoorde.
